Dorset Log Stores - Frequently Asked Questions

Here at Dorset Log Stores, our phone often rings, with people calling up with a quick question and we of course always take great delight it talking to our customers. But, to help out (cause we're the helpful sort here at Dorset Log Stores) I've put together a little blog on some of the questions we are most frequently asked.

What is Kindling?

Kindling is just small pieces of wood that are used to start a fire as they catch easier than logs.

What is the Difference between Softwoods and Hardwoods?

Generally speaking, softwoods are coniferous trees such as pines and fir trees, while hardwood trees are deciduous trees. Softwoods are quick to grow and dry, and are more commonly used as commercial wood. The fact that it is quick to grow and dry generally makes it cheaper too. Hardwood is denser making it harder to season, although it lasts longer than softwoods.

Why buy a wood store from Dorset Log Stores?

Our log stores are designed and made here in Dorset by local craftsmen. We are an established company with a reputation for quality in construction, finish and excellent customer service that we have worked hard to acquire and work even harder to maintain.

Why do you use Pressure Treated (tanalised) Timber for your Log Stores?

Our timber is treated with Tanalith-E, a modern anti-rot and fungal pressure treatment which will keep your log store in tip top condition for many years. Untreated timber is vulnerable to rot and fungal attack, it will not last as long, and you will be left with a log store that is falling apart.

What does "Seasoned" mean?

Seasoning of wood is when you allow the cut logs to be stored and dry out for a season. Wood contains a lot of moisture, so when logs are cut they should be stored and dried, for a few months at least to give you the optimum burn when you light them.

I hope this helps with any questions you might have, if you have a further question that you would like to ask us, you can always give us a ring on 01300 345916 or leave a comment below.

The Okeford Log Store

Here at Dorset Log Stores we have a full range of wicker baskets, fireside accessories and even great ideas like Wheelie Bin and Recycling Stores, but the one that draws the eye (and admiring comments from out customers) the most, is the Okeford Log Store.

The Okeford, practical and stylish

Perhaps the eyes are drawn by its graceful classic style, or mayhap they are assured by the resolute sturdiness and quality of the build. Either way, the Okeford Log Store proves again and again to be our most popular log store. Built to last using pressure treated timbers throughout, with a sturdy floor and well braced back and side panels, the Okeford is capable of holding a large stack of wood ready for seasoning.

The Okeford Log Store with Tiled Roof

There are two types of Okeford Log Store available, the standard Okeford Log Store or the Deep Okeford Log Store that has a depth of 3ft as opposed to the normal 2ft.  Both are solidly built and have our all important 19mm air flow gap for superior wood drying. A capacious log store, its forward pent roof is finished with ornate corner braces. Standing over 6ft high, the Okeford Log Store is available in three different widths; 4ft, 5ft and 6ft wide, meaning the ideal size is available for any garden space.

Add a shelf, choose your roof - we are happy to customise

You can also customise your Okeford Log Store to give it increased functionality or to add to its aesthetic charm. The option of having a full width shelf installed on the log store can give you a handy place to store your kindling firewood or any other little bits and bobs associated with the laborious task of chopping logs. The Okeford can also have a choice of roof to give the log store a certain charm. It comes with a traditional timber roof as standard but the option of either cedar shingle roofing or slate effect tiles can really help make the log store a central feature of the garden and a graceful elegance to its look.

There is scuttlebutt around the kettle, that a "Little Okeford" is on it's way too. Designed to be a small logstore, or hold two recycling boxes; or even as a half and half, it is perfect for smaller gardens or those with an economy of space, without surrendering any style, beauty or quality.

The Okeford Log Store is a wonderful store for your logs and firewood, filled with a graceful simplistic beauty and built strongly enough to last many years.
